Marine Survey

Welcome to Marine Search and Survey (MSS) – Enviroscan’s division focusing exclusively on marine geophysical services.  MSS was established in 1989, and Enviroscan’s principals worked closely with MSS before the birth of Enviroscan – providing the  foundation for a strong cooperative relationship. mss_logo_144x136 In April 2001, the two companies merged to expand Enviroscan’s marine survey capabilities, and to enhance MSS’s personnel, administrative, and logistical support. As a division of Enviroscan, MSS can now provide seamless data coverage for clients with both land and marine, or transition zone  projects. Over the past 12 years, MSS has worked worldwide – designing and conducting a wide variety of underwater searches and surveys.  MSS/Enviroscan’s marine geophysics capabilities include:

    • Hydrographic Surveys:  River, lake, or ocean floor bathymetric mapping – similar to land-based topographic surveying, and used for pre and post-dredging surveys, clearance of shipping lanes and berths, etc.

    • Multibeam Sonar:  Multichannel hydrographic surveying that records a wide swath of data along a single ship track.

    • Side Scan Sonar Surveys: River, lake, or ocean floor mapping similar to low-illumination-angle aerial photography (but illuminated with pulses of sound rather than light).  Side scan is useful for locating shipwrecks, downed aircraft, drums, tires, pipelines and many other targets, and is often used to locate obstructions in shipping lanes and berths or along pipeline routes.

    • Sub-Bottom Sonar Profiling:  Detection of targets or layering beneath the floors of rivers, lakes, or oceans – essentially single-channel seismic reflection, and similar to land-based ground penetrating radar (but using pulses of sound rather than radar).

    • Marine Seismic Reflection: Multichannel profiling of sediment and rock layering beneath the floors of rivers, lakes, or oceans.

    • Marine Magnetometry: Detection/mapping of iron-rich targets (shipwrecks, anchors, dredging equipment, UXO, etc.) on or beneath the bottoms of rivers and lakes, or the ocean floor.

    • Marine Metal Detection:  Detection/mapping of metal targets (not just iron) on or beneath river, lake, or ocean bottoms.

    • Electrical Imaging:  Two-dimensional (cross-sectional) imaging of sub-bottom electrical properties to detect and delineate sand, clay or gravel lenses, bedrock fractures, mineral deposits, metal debris, and a wide variety of other targets or geological features.

    • RoxAnn Sonar Mapping: River, lake, or ocean floor sediment characterization to create maps differentiating between mud, sand, rock, hardpan, fluff, etc.

MSS/Enviroscan routinely provides services to marine engineering companies, commercial divers, dredging companies, fishermen, shipping companies, ports, treasure hunters and government agencies (such as the US DOD, FBI, ATF, EPA, NOAA, COE, and the Navies and coastal surveys of numerous other countries). Please see the Our Services pages for more detailed descriptions of our marine geophysics capabilities.
